Richard Johnson, Joanna Cassidy, Edmund Purdom, Ida Galli, Nicoletta Gelmi. A filmmaker is working on a project concerning demonic paintings. When his young daughter comes to possess a mysterious ancient medallion, she falls under a terrible supernatural spell. This impressive Italian horror film obviously pays homage to thematic elements of both The Exorcist and The Omen. It boasts beautiful photography and an outstanding music score. Our special edition is a two disc set containing both the 35mm widescreen foreign version, which is subtitled in English and sports beautiful color, and the 35mm flat American version that many of us saw on the drive-in circuit back in the ‘70s. A Euro-horror fan’s delight!

"The Night Child" was Massimo Dallamano's 1975 thriller and somewhere after directing some superior films (he was cinematographer for many films including Sergio Leone's "A Fistful of Dollars" and "For a Few Dollars More") like "A Black Veil for Lisa" (1969) and "What Have You Done to Solange?" (1972) he kind of became less outstanding. Just prior to "The Night Child" he directed "Superbitch," not a giallo, but a crimesploitation film that was a bit ragged artistically. "The Night Child" is a three star occult/thriller for which Dallamano more than anythings extracts interesting performances from a talented cast including Richard Johnson (The Witch In Love" and "The Amorous Adventures of Moll Flanders"), Lila Kedrova ("Torn Curtain", "Zorba the Greek"), Joanna Cassidy ("Blade Runner"), Edmund Purdom in an extremely small role, the talented child actress,, Nicole Elmi ("Who Saw Her Die?") and Evelyn Stewart ("Assassination" and many others), but the story by Franco Marotta, Massimo Dallamano and Laura Toscano is underdeveloped and silly at times. The music score is extremely good by Stelvio Cipriani, perhaps a bit repetitious When I watched the first disc in this two disc "special edition" from Sinister Cinema, I thought well, Sinister Cinema has just provided us another washed color mediocre European film in English that must have been made from a VHS as their was distinctly old tracking problems at one point. But when I watched the second disc, the "European cut" I was pleasantly surprised by the beautiful color and crisp images of the immaculate transfer they provided of the film in Italian with English subtitles. And for the still low price offered on amazon. The Code Red edition is probably a way to scalp people as the film is not worth $60.00. Kudos to Sinister Cinema. I am usually willing to overlook some of their drawbacks as they, I think, have over and again done the best they can with what they have to work.
