he darco body armor night splint is the only night splint on the market today that actively engages the windlass mechanism of the foot resulting in a specific and sustained stretch to the plantar fascia and a sustained low load stretch to the flexor tendons, Achilles tendon, and calf muscles.
Foot Care. Night Splint Body Armor Darco One Size Fits All. Made in: United States
Loading the windlass mechanism naturally brings the foot/ankle to a near 90 degree angle thus eliminating the “lever effect” and the resulting pressure on the apex of the ankle present in other dorsal models.
Elastic connector ring allows for natural flexion of the foot and toes. Low profile design allows for maximum user comfort and compliance.
I chose this one since it was the original brand I had used. I did try less expensive ones that did not fit but went back to this one. If you must wear this provides best results and comfort.I have bilateral plantar fasciitis; mild in one foot, severe in the other. At first I had tried the BIRD & CRONIN splint from my podiatrist but found the narrow straps cut into my ankle if I tightened them enough to get a good flexion.I had spent many hours researching and reading reviews looking for a splint with wide straps that wouldn't cut into the top of my foot, accommodate my high dorsal arch, was low profile to allow me to turn in bed with both feet splinted.I tried the Night Splint Body Armor Darco, which is a DORSAL splint. I liked the idea of the toe loop to give my foot the dorsal-flexion it needed. Unfortunately the dorsal splint did not meet up with my expectations. At most with this dorsal splint on I was able to get my foot to stay in a neutral position, no flexion. That was only after tightening the straps so tight as to ending up with numbness on the top of my foot. Loosening the straps allowed my foot to be able to slide forward enough to make it ineffective. After adding a 1 inch thick foam pad to the front of my foot/calf was I able sleep with the splint in place all night. Positives: It was light weight, comfortable, easy to walk in. I think this one may work for some.Third I tried the Swede-O Deluxe Padded Plantar Fasciitis Night Splint. This was by far the most comfortable. The straps were wide and I was able to strap my foot in well enough that I had a solid splint. It also comes with a extra wedge to increase flexion. (I did not try this) I had the same complaints as others. I wear a womens 9 and ordered the smaller size Medium. the splint is still fairly big and I think I could have even gone with a size small. The velcro is very strong and the edges of the velcro can be irritating. Positive/negative: as it is very well padded my foot got too warm to be comfortable (and this is winter in Wisconsin) I doubt I would be able to stand it in warmer weather.I am back to using the BIRD & CRONIN splint. I found that if I cross the two bottom straps I get a snug fit that doesn't cut into the top of my foot and keeps it flexed. This one is very open and allows for my feet to stay cool. Still bulkier than I would like, it will have to do.I've had it about 3 weeks now and most mornings my heel is less painful, but not all depending on what I did or didn't do in the way of excercises the day before. I'm a stomach sleeper so my foot still tries to flatten out thus shortening my achillies tendon somewhat. I think if it had a separate bottom piece that velcroed together with the top piece it might be better yet. I am worried about the velcro not sticking very well after some time. You tend to put it in the same place and that place is already less secure than if I go looser (no real help then) or tighter (and risk shooting pains the entire next day), been there, done both. I do like it. I do think it's the best thing out there except for a much more cumbersome and way too hot removeable foot cast. You are able to make a very short trip without removing it, say to the rest room at night. Overall I'd have to say that the morning pain is better now than before I started using this brace. I am also trying to do the excercises the doctor gave me, no gold stars yet tho. Like many others I usually only loosen the two bottom-most straps to remove it and to put it back on that night. I'd say try this one, as with most items some people get more than others out of using it. It helped that it was also a decent price.Oct. 10 Thought I would update as I have been using this every night for almost 2 months. The main issue I thought would be the Velcro closures but they seem to be doing fine. I do try to move their position slightly every night and maybe this helps. They do not hold as securely as they did when new but it only takes a second to reset one or the other strap should it come loose. No biggie to me. My heel pain is so much improved I tried one night without it but had some pain the next day altho not at all as bad as it was. I really believe that over a little more time I will be able to do without the brace some nights. Hope this helps.my feet is a UK size 4.5 -5. this is too big for my foot and thus thus not effective.Very pleased with this product. It does exactly what it says it will do. It has helped to reduce pain.
