Lascivious, mysterious, euphoric-those words come to mind when describing the book "Mistress of Light and Dawn." The book is an erotic mystery.Aurelia, the main character of the book, is haunted by her parents strange death when she is very young. Full of youth and inexperience, she longs for a man to fulfill her as she decides to pursue questions about her past. A strange ball full of passion and intrigue comes to town (this part reminds one of the Night Circus book) around the same time that Aurelia starts having odd, sexual encounters with a man she comes to know as Andrei. Her parents mysterious death, the fantastic circumstances around her birth and life, and her love of Andrei all come to a head, and she must make a choice to accept her destiny, or to reject her fate.I really, really enjoyed this book. It was a very good diversion from life's tasks, and was wonderful reading it after my kids and husband went to bed. The story to me is very familiar-I read a lot of fantasy/science fiction/erotica type works-but what stands out is the writing style. At times Victorian, in other areas very modern, the gothic writing style kept me wanting more and made the book worth reading. Will Aurelia understand her karma, and come to terms with it rejecting most of what she holds dear? Will she choose Andrei, her nighttime lover, or Tristan, a new yet incredible boy in the decadent, exclusive ball that appears as quickly as it retreats? I highly recommend, especially since summer is upon us, and a little smutty reading that seems sophisticated is essential.
